Volunteers Needed!

There are a variety of activities for volunteers who can donate time to help Metro Ferals. Many activities require only an hour or a few hours per week; other activities may require a significant amount of time for a limited period. In all cases, training and support will be provided by other experienced volunteers. Click on a link that might interest you! Trapping feral cats and having them vetted will impact the over-population of cats in our communities. We get calls from all areas of DC and are always in need of people who are willing to trap these cats for a scheduled clinic.

Requires a person to either fill in for a caretaker that is on leave or managing an existing colony that has no caretaker.  The cats have been completely vetted at one of sites.  This activity also requires giving fresh water and tidying up the area. The feeders are responsible for the food, however, Metro Ferals will distribute donated food when available.

Foster homes provide temporary housing for kittens and cats. You might only want to do one adult or a litter of kittens, or perhaps bottle babies. Or you might want to socialize a litter of kittens so that can get a home.  Please discuss your wants and desires to our adoption coordinator. 

You must have a room or different level of a house that is isolated from your cats/animals but can still receive attention.  You must learn how to watch for certain illnesses and be able to administer basic medical care.  We have experienced foster homes that can be a support for you.

You provide the food, shelter and Metro Ferals provides the medical. We have adoption fairs bi-monthly and in convenient locations and arrangements will need to be made for the transportation to and from fairs. Foster homes are desperately needed because we can’t rescue the hundreds of kittens we trap in cat colonies without having a place to take them to and care for them.

WE HAVE AN URGENT NEED FOR THIS POSITION.

Metro Ferals is in need of an adoption/foster home coordinator.  This person will be responsible for the coordination of incoming cats and kittens, evaluating, documenting and placing the cat/kitten into a foster home. This person will not be required to attend the fairs, although lines to communication to the foster homes will be very important.  This position will require to work one on one with the President and be able to work independently but also with the foster homes and trappers. High involvement within the organization.

This activity includes setting up/taking down tables and chairs at the adoption site. The public will have many questions about the kittens and cats and you will also be responsible for screening potential adopters and supervise as they interact with the animals. This activity usually requires 3-4 hours a weekend.

This activity requires a once a week time commitment that is typically is 2 hours, at our private shelter. This shelter temporarily houses feral cats that have lost their home due to either construction or being deliberately harmed by people. It involves scooping litter boxes, wiping food bowels, cleaning water bowels, feeding canned food. Can also include special tasks, such as painting or window cleaning. This activity is great is someone wants “hands on” with the cats. This shelter is not open to the public and is not for domestic strays.

Metro Ferals can sometimes get up to 40 calls a day from the public concerning feral cats. Each call requires a different plan of action and a different approach.  Each call needs to be classified as either urgent or stable.  Each intake must be given trap information, clinic information and the volunteer must be able to stay calm, no matter what the situation has involved.  Must ask questions and keep good logs.

Metro Ferals is in the process of developing a quarterly newsletter for the community. This newsletter will have information on trapping, colonies, and also have numbers of total cats spayed/neutered at our clinics.  This information will also be used for fundraising as well. The newsletter will also contain information on building inexpensive cat shelters, where to find the high quality but inexpensive feral cat food, etc.

Metro Ferals is run by donations only. What sets us apart from other rescue groups, is the fact we spend all of Metro Ferals monies on spaying/neutering and medical for feral cats.  Our adoptable cats and kittens are not the bulk of what we do.  We get many calls from people who are feeding cats who are on disability, a fixed income, or in bad times, but still continue to care for the cats.  Metro Ferals wants to be able to help as many cats as possible but in order to accomplish this, we need private donations. This activity requires making calls and sending out appeal letters.  Please talk to the President for more details.

Metro Ferals has more than one low cost clinic in the DC area. Each clinic require extensive paperwork/accounting to track numbers, and costs, items used and needed. Please talk to the President about this position.
